In Ireland in 2018, there are over 20 distilleries and whiskey visitor attractions. Many of the new micro-distilleries are tucked away in the Irish countryside and if you arrive at their door for a tour, don't be surprised if they're right in the middle of distilling.
At the smaller distilleries, you're literally meeting the folks behind the brands. Take Pádraic of Connemara Distillers. Padraig is a 6th generation distiller and he is making his very own poitín at a secret distillery at a famous pub in Galway. He remains respectful of traditions and customs set by his forefathers, such as leaving a jar of poitín outside the door of the distillery for ‘the good people’ - spirits of people no longer with us. Leaving the jar outside is a gesture and a toast to them - it is considered respectful and is meant to bring good luck.
Irish whiskey is the fastest growing premium spirit in the world and as a result the distillery scene in Ireland is booming! In 2018, our tours incorporate a total of 22 distillery visits (in 2013, just five distilleries were offering tours in Ireland). Want to drink some great whiskeys while you are in Ireland and take an off-the-beaten track adventure on our island in a day or longer?
